Job description

Head Of Risk - £70,000-£100,000

Purpose:

Working closely with the Chief Risk Officer, to provide leadership, oversight, and guidance across all areas of Risk Management. Own and embed the Charity's risk management framework and support effective identification, assessment, treatment, and reporting of risks across the Charity.

Proactively support the Charity in the delivery of its strategy and objectives by supporting the identification and mitigation of risks to the achievement of these goals. Support the setting of the Charity's risk appetite and embed this into the decision making of the Charity.

Provide appropriate assurance that risks are adequately controlled, and that risk issues and incidents are appropriately reported, remediated, and managed through to closure.

Maintain relationships with regulators; and work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that a positive culture of risk management is embedded throughout the charity and its two subsidiary businesses.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Oversee risk management activity across the Charity, ensuring that risk is taken and managed within the risk appetite approved by the Board.
  • Ensure that risks to the strategy and objectives of the Charity are well-understood and are being effectively monitored and managed.
  • Continuously improve risk management reporting to the Executive, Board and relevant committees, to enable oversight of key risks and effective risk decision making.
  • Support the development of and embedding of an effective and appropriate risk management framework and culture in the Charity.
  • Develop risk metrics and indicators to monitor risk exposure and potential or actual breaches of risk appetite.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the material risks faced by the Charity and ensure that risk management resources and activities are appropriately aligned to the most material risks.
  • Work closely with the broader Directorate functions including compliance, data protection and monitoring to ensure delivery of the risk-based support across the Charity and the Subsidiaries
  • Be a role model for all levels of colleague within the charity by adhering to, supporting, and ensuring adoption of all the charity's agreed policies, procedures and practices; fostering a positive risk management culture across the first line areas within the charity.
  • Build effective and collaborative relationships with key internal stakeholders
  • Build annual departmental cost budgets and ensure these are maintained within plan
  • Ensure a high standard of recruitment, induction, and ongoing training of colleagues in the department, and that the team is resourced appropriately.
  • Contribute to the development of the Risk & Compliance functional strategy and own the risk management element of this strategy, ensuring that plans are in place to deliver the strategy and that these are monitored on an ongoing basis
  • Discharge all responsibilities assigned to you and perform all your tasks, duties and responsibilities with due care and diligence as required by the charity and in doing so have full regard of the FCA conduct rules.

You will need to have:

Experience/knowledge:

  • Relevant experience in a risk leadership role working in regulated environment.
  • Detailed understanding of enterprise and operational risk management.
  • High level of business acumen to balance operational, conduct and strategic risk with an ability to explain the impact for the Charity and individuals promptly and accurately.
  • Experience of leading the remediation of significant risk issues.
  • Use of data and assurance techniques to provide oversight and monitoring of risks.
